Publication: Risk Management as the key to trustworthy data spaces

Data Spaces generate new possibilities for the secure and confident exchange of data. But for companies, organizations, and data providers to capitalize on this potential, one thing is essential: trust.

The new white paper “Risk and Insurance Management for Data Space Operators in their Role as Data Trustees” shows how data space operators can systematically identify, assess, and manage risks—and why professional risk management is becoming a key success factor for functioning data ecosystems.

Published by Green Deal Dataspace e. V. and written in collaboration with Advaneo GmbH and Funk Consulting GmbH, this paper offers the first concise introduction to the main challenges of risk management in the context of data trustees and presents concrete starting points for greater transparency, security, and scalability in the data space. It is based on findings from the ScaleTrust R&D project, which developed approaches for e.g. scalable compliance, trust models, and trustworthy data collaborations.

Using the Green Deal Dataspace as an example, the paper demonstrates how risk management can be implemented in a federated data space. This includes structured risk and action inventories, quick checks for participants, technical evidence through audit trails and monitoring, as well as the question of how insurance management—particularly in the context of cyber risks—can be meaningfully integrated.
